Asun is spicy peppered goat meat from south-west Nigeria. Isi ewu is a goat head dish from the south-east. Both are on our menu.
Goat is a favourite meat in Nigeria. Two of our dishes show how differently it’s cooked in different parts of the country.
Asun
Asun comes from the Yoruba south-west, especially Ekiti and Ondo states. It’s goat meat, usually with the skin on, that is grilled or roasted until smoky, then cut into small pieces and tossed in a hot sauce of peppers and onions.
Asun is spicy, chewy and smoky. It’s popular at parties and as a snack with drinks. You’ll find it in the appetisers on our menu.
Isi ewu
Isi ewu means “goat head” in Igbo, and comes from the south-east of Nigeria. The goat head is cooked and cut up, then mixed into a thick, spicy sauce made with palm oil and ground spices, and topped with sliced onions and utazi leaves, which are bitter.
It’s a rich dish, traditionally eaten slowly with a cold drink, and often served in a wooden bowl. Isi ewu is in the specials on our menu.
Goat pepper soup
If you like goat but want something lighter, try our goat meat pepper soup. It’s in the specials too. See our guide to pepper soup.
How hot are they?
Asun in particular is meant to be hot. If you’d like it milder, tell us when you order.
