A guide to the Nigerian drinks at K’s Spice, from Maltina and Supermalt to Nigerian Guinness, Star, Gulder and Orijin.
Our bar has drinks you won’t find in most British pubs. Here’s a guide to the Nigerian ones.
Malt drinks
Malt drinks are fizzy, sweet, non-alcoholic drinks brewed from barley malt, a bit like an unfermented beer. They’re dark brown, with a taste of malt and caramel. In Nigeria they’re drunk by all ages, often with food.
On our menu: Maltina, Malta Guinness, Supermalt and Afrimalt.
Nigerian Guinness
Nigerian Guinness is Guinness Foreign Extra Stout. It’s stronger and more bitter than the Guinness you get on draught in the UK, with a sharper taste. We have it in large and small sizes.
Nigerian lagers
- Star: a lager from Nigerian Breweries, one of the best known beers in Nigeria.
- Gulder: another lager from Nigerian Breweries.
We also have Stella and Heineken.
Orijin
Orijin is a Nigerian alcoholic drink flavoured with African herbs and fruit, with a bittersweet taste.
Palm juice
Palm juice is on our alcoholic drinks list. In Nigeria, the fermented sap of palm trees is called palm wine, and it’s cloudy, slightly sweet and a little sour.
Nigerian soft drinks
We have Nigerian Fanta and Nigerian Coke, as well as bitter lemon and the usual UK soft drinks.
Fresh juices
Fresh orange, apple, carrot and mixed juice.
Spirits
Hennessy, Jack Daniel’s and Rémy Martin are on the menu too.
What goes with what
A cold malt or lager goes well with spicy food like suya, asun or pepper soup.
